Breast cancer sucks. You go from feeling great to someone telling you that pesky lump in your boob is not just your period talking smack again to your mammaries, but a knot of cells that are like crack-head zombies who have forgotten how to die. Those cells you are told, will now proliferate and invade every organ of your body in an effort to destroy you unless immediate action is taken. Why? Well, (they say...) we don't really know why- but today is your lucky day! They (the medical community...) have all these amazing, incredible, advanced protocols (okay, okay, you're right, technically they are poisons and archaic surgical mutilations- but hey, we're trying to help you here!) in place to help you battle 'IT'. No guarantees- but let us at it!
Angelina Jolie's mother, Marcheline Bertrand died at the age of 56 after an almost eight-year battle with ovarian cancer. She had also suffered through breast cancer. Marcheline's own mother died at the age of 45 from ovarian cancer. Angelina tested positive for the BRCA1 mutation which made it clear her chances of having to deal with the same issues were incredibly high.
There's no one right choice for a woman in Angelina Jolie's position,
but her courage to face the spectrum of grim possibilities head on and take what action she could to tilt the balance in favor of a longer stay on planet earth to see her own children grown is nothing short of heroic.
These photographs are absolutely lovely. I hope she stays in love with her dude and lives to be an old, old lady.
